Project Description

The City of Courtenay is discussing the option of a partnership with the Timber Framers Guild (TFG, non-profit) to construct a covered wooden bridge for pedestrian and bicycle traffic across the Courtenay River.  For more information about the TFG - www.tfguild.org

The pictures shown here are representative of a design - that has yet to be determined.  This model is used for discussion and rough estimating purposes only and may not reflect the final version which will be developed with community participation.

Characteristics of the bridge will be:

Located foot of 6th Street to Simms Memorial Park
Approx. 60 m single span dedicated lanes for pedestrians & cyclists
Timber construction using local sources (2nd growth if possible)
Arched deck design for aesthetics and structural integrity
Fully compliant with all codes and best practices

Significant cost savings due to volunteer labor of professionals from around the world
Potential for government support / funding to offset City costs
Proven TFG track record of similar successful projects (Golden. B.C. & Guelph, On)

Construction process:

Summer 2013 - 70 - 100 (international) Timber carpenter volunteers in town for 3 - 4 weeks to build
Local craftspeople and volunteers encouraged - there are a variety of tasks to choose from
Educational components to include local schools & trades
Billeting, food, and support of volunteers by community
